Can Dogs Eat Raw Game Meat?

As far as I’m concerned, I know that rotating Wally’s raw protein sources is super important.

That’s because different cuts of meats from different animals have different nutrients.

That said, venison is a type of red, lean game meat that’s very rich in the following:

  • Proteins
  • Minerals
  • B-Vitamins
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Generally speaking, wild harvested deer is richer in nutrients than farmed animals because they get to eat a much larger variety of nuts, seeds, grass, berries etc.

If you feed deer you’ve hunted yourself, you’ll have to freeze the meat for 3 weeks prior to feeding it. This ensures that it’s free of the parasite Trichinella.

Obviously, you won’t have to do that with the frozen venison raw dog food from Raw Paws Pet Food because…well, it’s been frozen for at least 3 weeks when it makes it to your front door!

Who Is Raw Paws Pet Food?

If you’re new to the blog, you may not know Raw Paws Pet Food yet, so let me introduce you!

Raw Paws Pet Food is a family owned business in the dog and cat nutrition world, and they specialize in raw pet food.

I’ve fed them on and off since 2015 when I first began learning about and feeding my then pups Missy & Buzz raw dog food.

They’re not the least expensive raw dog food brand, but their quality is top notch, AND they have sales on a very regular basis.

Unlike other online raw dog food retailers, they also ship extremely quickly.

Here’s what makes Raw Paws’ venison so great:

  • Sourced from wild-harvested deer from the Australian Outback
  • Rich game taste

It’s also a great alternative for dogs who are allergic to more common sources of protein like chicken and beef.

How to Feed Raw Venison Dog Food from Raw Paws Pet Food

My pup Wally weighs 38 lbs and eats the venison raw dog food from Raw Paws Pet Food two different ways:

  • (1) as an in-between snack
  • (2) as a complete meal mixed with a base mix like Paradigm from Dr. Harvey’s or the veggie, nut & seed option from The Honest Kitchen
  • (3) as a complete meal with secreting organs, raw meaty bones, veggies and oily fish.

In raw feeding, (3) are the cuts that make up balanced, raw meals. Option (2) is the easiest way of feeding a complete raw meal.

The exact amount your adult dog needs depends on their target body weight.

Of that, start with a maintenance percentage of 2.5% and adjust that amount as necessary.

Read how much your puppy needs here.

Here’s how to calculate the daily raw dog food amount your adult dog needs – we’ll use Wally as an example.

We’ll divide his target body weight of 38lbs by 100, then we’ll multiply it with the maintenance percentage of 2.5:

38/100 = 0.38 x 2.5 = 0.95lb. That’s 15.2oz.

Of those 15.2oz, Wally needs to eat:

  • 60% muscle meat (9.12oz, some of this can be covered by the venison)
  • 10% oily fish (1.52oz)
  • 10% raw meaty bones (1.52oz)
  • 5% liver (0.76oz)
  • 5% other secreting organs (0.76oz)
  • 10% plant matter (1.52oz)

Good to know: Raw meaty bones also consist of muscle meat, so it’s important to know the bone/muscle meat ratio of the different cuts of raw meaty bones.

Here are some common ones:

  • Necks: 50% bone, 50% muscle meat
  • Heads: 75% bone, 25% muscle meat
  • Frames: 75% bone, 25% muscle meat
  • Feet: 60% bone, 40% muscle meat
  • Backs: 45% bone, 55% muscle meat

Other Feeding Ideas for Raw Venison Dog Food

I also gave Wally some of the venison-only meals in his KONG. If you’re not familiar with KONGs, you’re missing out!

They’re natural rubber dog toys made in the USA, and some of them can be used as dog food puzzles because they’re hollow on the inside.

The best feature to me is that it’s top-rack dishwasher safe!

After I stuffed the KONGs with Wally’s ground venison, I went ahead and put them in his chest freezer.

Yes, you read that right, Wally has his own chest freezer for his raw dog food. It’s my way of making sure that I stay on budget with feeding him raw.

That’s because I like to take advantage of meat sales!

That way they last him a lot longer, and they’re a wonderful way of cooling him off on our hot NC summer days.
